Your House Painter – The Professional Artist

As this month’s blogs are being prepared, it took some reflection to decide on the topics most appropriate for summertime. As usual, this writer took some time to read up on what the latest commentary about commercial and residential painting has to say. It is an interesting industry and really much more complex than the label of ‘painting’ would imply.

In fact, the residential and commercial painting company could be compared to a professional visual artist. A visual artist takes the time to identify a subject of their painting and they often stick with that for the entirety of their career – think of Georgia O’Keefe or Monet. Well, the residential painter has chosen their subject as well – your homes and businesses.

A visual artist is also very fussy about their work. They are often portrayed as ‘lost in thought’ – thinking over where to begin, what strokes to use, what the final product will say to the novice and critic. Nothing could be truer of the residential and commercial painter as well. We begin by stepping back and taking in the project as a whole – whether it be painting your home or business interior or exterior. We spend much time in advance visualizing the final product and deciding the approach long before materials are purchased, and the first stroke of the paintbrush hits the surface.

The visual artist will often pause while painting to reflect on the progress of the work long before finishing. This is a self-assessment to ensure that the work is on target. The professional industrial and residential painter can be seen doing the same thing. At regular intervals we take the time to step back and view the work from a holistic perspective – ensuring that it is headed in the direction the customer requested and we promised. It is easier to make changes along the way if a problem has been identified than wait until the process has been completed and then decide someone is not satisfied.

Finally, the visual artist will bask in the glow of a completed piece and – if you must know – the residential and commercial artist does the same! The painter of artworks that hang in museums or those that refresh the look of a home or business takes a certain pride and sense of satisfaction in their completed work. After all, we are professional artists! If you would like your home or business to shine like a masterpiece, contact the professional ‘artists’ at University Painters, Inc. We look forward to servicing you.

What to Know Before Painting Your Offices?

Most people devote forty hours or more a week to their workplace. Your office is your home away from home and when it starts to look dingy it can affect worker productivity. Painting the inside and outside of a business on a regular basis is a good business strategy. What follows are some ideas for what to take into consideration before beginning the process.

• Think about your clientele or the people you serve. If you are a business that caters to teens, then a bold color scheme inside and out will be appealing. If you work with families, then a toned-down color would probably be more suitable. Indoor walls will keep their pristine presentation longer if washable paint is used. It is also advisable to buy the more expensive paint. Research has shown that it wears better over time.
• Choose a color that will be easy to replace when it comes time to touch up the interior or exterior surfaces. In other words, just because orange-pineapple-green is the hot color today doesn’t mean that you will be able to find it in a year or two when you need to paint over or brush up areas that have shown wear and tear.
• Keep your interior and exterior walls clean. This will make your business more inviting from the inside and outside. Keep a small area of your walls covered and remove the covering occasionally. This will allow you to tell how dingy your paint job has become and will indicate that it’s time to spruce things up.
• Touching up your paint job inside and out can be a rather tricky business. Because the color has been exposed to the elements inside and out, it may be difficult to perform a touch up or patch job that won’t be noticeable. When it comes to touching up a paint job it is easier to do with a flat paint than a glossy one. Knowing this in advance may help you decide the type of finish you want to put on your walls from the outset.

Here are Some More Suggestions for Choosing a Paint Color

This is not a new topic – but it is definitely one that readers are always asking about. The question most painters are asked at nearly every job is “how do I choose a color of paint for my ‘fill in the blank”’. It could be a bathroom, bedroom, home exterior, trim, business, or some other project. Well, believe it or not there are a number of ideas that should help you in the decision-making process. After all choosing a color is a very personal decision that can be distressing if you opt for a color you find you can’t live with.

• Take the time to identify trends. Hop on the internet and scour it for pictures of different colors that you favor. If you don’t like a certain color then ignore what the ‘experts’ are saying about this choice. For example, one paint company claimed that the new trend in house painting is the color black. If you are not a fan then it won’t matter how many people say this is ‘in’. Move on.
• Consider palettes of color. If you are partial to a tint you can usually find it nestled along an array of similar shades – light to dark. This may help you begin the narrowing down process.
• Keep in mind the little things. For example, if you are painting the exterior of your home will you want trim? Will it be a complementary or contrasting color? What about painting a business? What color will draw the eye of a potential customer instead of repelling them? It’s true – color can be off-putting for many people.
• Don’t forget that the sheen of the paint is important as well. You can choose a color that is along the continuum from flat to shiny, each with its own appeal and drawbacks.
• Always, always, always get a sample of the color and apply it to a small area where it will be seen. Give it a couple days before you decide if it’s right for you or not. But, remember to prep the surface in advance of applying the sample so you get a true vision of its final look.

Now, enjoy your paint choosing process. It’s really part of the privilege of owning a home or business. If you need help, contact the experts at University Painters, Inc. You’ll be glad you did!

Double Checking Commercial Painting Projects

So, you have decided to take the plunge and have your commercial property upgraded with a new paint job. You have done your due diligence and gotten no less than three quotes. You’ve compared them for similarities and differences to help determine what best fits your needs at the most reasonable price.

  1. Compare the number of hours the contractor bids to complete the job. If there is a wide discrepancy among the bids, question each contractor on how they arrived at that number and then use your common sense. Some contractors will underbid the number of hours just to get the business and then either cut corners to complete the job during the listed time frame or come back and say there were time and cost overruns. The internet is an excellent resource to get an estimate for this information.
  2. Go over the terms of the contract with your painter prior to both people signing it. The painter has the option of visiting the site more than once to ensure they have given the job its ‘due’. Any changes or decisions to back out should occur before both parties agree. Otherwise, it can become a legal matter.
  3. This is your business! Walk through the job with the painter and have them explain what they intend to do. Because it is only fair that the professional be paid for their time, expect that they will require a fee for these services.
  4. It is a good idea to visit a few jobs the painter has completed previously. It will give you a better idea of what a finished product looks like. Any reputable painter will be more than happy to provide references.
You are a smart business owner – otherwise you wouldn’t exist! Do the smart thing by keeping your property presentable while also getting the best bang for your buck. One last piece of advice – you might take the time to visit a work site in progress. There is nothing more insightful than seeing the painting company at work.
  5. If you are in the market for a reputable and expert painting company for your commercial property, contact the professionals at University Painters, Inc. We look forward to working with you.

Match the Color of Your Home’s Exterior to the Style

There are so many different styles of homes in the United States! People who live in certain locales tend to find them clustered. For example, if you live along the northeast coast you will find a lot of Cape Cod type homes. Floridians go for a more coastal look. In the Midwest there are blocks of Victorian homes mixed in with the colonial look, which, by the way, is a favorite style of Virginians. In Texas you’ll see lots of ranches. Yes, your home usually reflects the general style of the community.

As a result, when it’s time to paint the exterior to give it a fresh look, the paint company you choose should know the best colors to accentuate your home. In fact, they should be able to assist in the decision-making process of color selection by offering suggestions based on their professional knowledge. However, here are a few recommendations that should help you start thinking about the right color for your home.

If you own a home by the water, particularly the ocean or a lake, the best colors that blend with the environment are blues, grays and white. These colors help the house blend into the scenery using the water as a backdrop to tranquility. Interestingly, recent decorators suggest that a bright colored door can give the home a fun look. But, approach this idea with caution!

A colonial home generally presents best with classic colors such as grays, greens, soft yellows, blues or the quintessential whites. Again, decorators in recent years have recommended a bright color door to offset the mild look of light colored paint. Take pictures of homes that have made that choice and think it over before using this idea for your own home.

Ranch homes are one-floor styles of the 1950s. In their heyday they could be painted any color and often were! Today, however, they present best in muted tones of browns, grays, blues or even avocado. Bright colors are no longer acceptable.

Finally, Victorian homes tend to look good in any number of colors, so you are able to choose a color that suits your personal taste. Don’t forget that the shingles, driveway and other accents of the home can be tailored to your style as well. Looking to redo your home’s exterior? Let the professionals at University Painters, Inc. provide you with exceptional service!

Color Theory and Exterior Paint

We have all seen that house on the block that stands out for one reason or another.  Sometimes the house stands out because it is the only pink house in a neighborhood filled with muted blue and grey homes.  There are also homes that are picturesque that stand out because the contrast from the white siding, to the red door, and black window frames are so aesthetically pleasing that we feel at home just driving by.  In order to maximize the value of your largest asset, it is important to freshen up the exterior paint every few years.  Sometimes a bold change may be in order, and other times a fresh coat of paint is all that is needed.  Regardless of the reasoning, the professionals at University Painters are seasoned experts when it comes to all things about painting, and can not only provide the award winning paint job you are looking for, but make sure that you find the color scheme you desire.

With spring right around the corner, it is almost prime painting season.  The season, the style of home, personal preference, and frame of mind all come into choosing the paint color for your home.  The most common colors chosen for exterior home painting are grey, black, and white.  These neutral colors tend to blend into any neighborhood, and match any style of home.  If you want to utilize your home’s design and help it to stand out, bolder color options are always available.

Choosing a bold color to go with a neutral base can bring out all the beautiful details that are designed into your home, as well as show off a little bit of your personality.  Purple, a color that is known to represent nobility, can be the perfect accent to a white home.  Grey and white, combined with a little yellow have been known to add a subtle sophistication to a home.  A bold red used as the main color of the house, accented by white and black trim and window panels can stand out in a manner that shows strength and confidence.  For a calm, peaceful, and serene vibe, a mild green is a perfect color.

Color theory plays a large role in many aspects of life, and should not be overlooked when it comes to your home.  Never be afraid to let your personality shine through the exterior of your home as it does on the inside.  The trained specialists at University Painters are experts in all things paint, including how to use color to accent your home’s finer attributes.  For more information, to schedule an appointment, or request a quote, please visit universitypainters.com

Simple Steps for Choosing Paint Color

One of the nice things about designing and decorating the interior of your home is that you are not locked into one style. Because there are multiple rooms of different sizes, each room with its own special purpose and personality, you do not have to decide on just one or two color schemes. Another thing that is nice about painting individual rooms is that they are smaller. If you choose a color for a room then realize halfway through painting that the color just does not fit, it is an easy fix. There are a number of thoughts and tricks that come along with choosing the colors for the inside of your home, and the multi-talented professionals at University Painters are adept at helping you through the entire process.

When choosing the colors for a room, your personality plays a large role. Some people prefer bright, loud colors, while others prefer more subtle and muted tones. No matter what you are feeling, the first step is seeing how those colors will look in your space. Get multiple samples and swatches of the colors you are interested in so that you can see how they look in your home. The bright fluorescent lights in stores make paint samples look different compared to the natural lighting from your living room window. Take your color samples, put them on the wall, and see how they look at all times of the day; morning, afternoon, and night. See how they absorb the sunrise and reflect the light of the moon.

When you think you have found the color, collect multiple swatches of that color and tape them together on your wall creating a larger swatch. See what this color really looks like in your space. It is also important to test the paint on all of the walls in the room. The color will look different from different angles, and reflect light differently in certain areas. This will also give you the opportunity to test your color against different options for the color of your trim.

Decorating and painting the inside of your home can be stressful, so make sure to take your time and have fun with it. Play with different options and see what really appeals to you. You never know when the green you wanted in your bedroom may actually fit better in the bathroom. When you are ready to start painting, or if you need recommendations in choosing your paint, the trained eye of the staff at University Painters is ready to help. The Attitude of a Room

Different colors evoke different emotions. Light blues and greens are known to be calming, and tend to help soothe and relax. High energy colors like bright yellows and purples can add a level of excitement and fun to an otherwise bland environment. When people get angry they say that they are “seeing red,” but red is really a color of strength and conviction. When painting the rooms in your home, there are hundreds of different color combinations that can be used to bring atmosphere to any room. Each room has its own identity, and with the help of the creative and inspired experts at University Painters, you can choose the right color to breathe life and positive energy into each room of your home.

The bathroom is often the smallest room in the house, but plays one of the largest roles in our day. When you wake up in the morning, it is not uncommon to go straight from the bed to the bathroom, and vice versa at bed time. It is where you get ready to face the day, and the room should bring a calm and peaceful, yet lively energy to your day. Pastels can bring a Zen-like atmosphere to any bathroom. If your bathroom connects to a bedroom, consider warm colors that flow naturally into the color of the bedroom. Strong and contrasting colors can also give the illusion of space to a smaller bathroom.

The living room is your entertainment space. It’s where you and your family will relax and watch a movie, and it’s also the room where you will invite your friends for game night. Neutral colors are not only inviting, but can blend naturally into the colors of adjoining rooms. That makes them perfect for living rooms, which are often wide open spaces in the home. Do not be afraid of the multiple different options that are available in the spectrum of shades of white. A nice accent wall can stand out and give the room a little pop.

When it comes to the bedroom there are multiple things to consider. Start with how you want the room to feel; do you want it to have its own built-in energy, or be calm? Your bed sheets can also provide inspiration for the color scheme of the entire room, not just the bed. When painting your bedroom, consider giving the room a little extra character by coloring the ceiling. After walking through a house full of white ceilings, some unexpected color on the ceiling of your bedroom can really boost the room’s idiosyncrasy.

Each room in your home has its own personality that is chosen by you. The beautiful thing is, you can choose and change this personality over and over again. So every time you are ready to give a room a little facelift, let the experts at University Painters be your guides. Pre-qualifying the professional interior painter

So you’ve decided to use a professional painter to do your interior paint job – now comes the important part – choosing a reliable firm. There are many painters out there that claim to be professionals but knowing their qualifications and insurance coverage will help save you time, money and headaches in the end.

One of the first things to do is go to your state’s business search website to see if they are registered with the state for interior painting and not just as a handyman.  Another way is to look at online Yelp reviews and the Better Business Bureau in the originating town of the business. Be aware that if you ask the business for customer references, if the business is not reputable in the first place, they may try using friends and family as references.  Always verify a business through several sources.

One of the reasons you need to check their insurance is to be sure they are current with their general liability and workmen’s compensation coverage. I know this does not seem like something that might affect you, but it definitely could. If they are not current on their workmen’s compensation coverage and someone gets hurt on the job on your property, it could be the responsibility of your homeowner’s insurance to cover their medical bills. As for the general liability, if there is damage to your home or personal belongings during the painting process you want to be sure there is enough current coverage in place, otherwise you will be out the cost of the damages.

One other thing is to ensure that all workers in your home have had background checks performed; you need to know who will be in your home around your personal belongings and family members. This should be a prerequisite to you hiring a company. When all is said and done, you want to know that the work will be done in a timely manner with the least risk and intrusion into your life. University Painters is fully insured with $2,000,000 of General Liability Insurance and are Fully Compliant with all Worker’s Compensation requirements. The University Painters Estimator will provide proof of their insurance at the time of the estimate. Painting Older Homes

Whether you have just purchased an older home or are updating one, there are some things to consider when beginning your painting project. Older homes quite often have peeling, yellowing paint and possibly lead paint with many blemishes that will need to be removed. You may also be dealing with wallpaper that is old and peeling that needs to be stripped before you refinish the walls and apply new paint. If you are concerned about the lead-based paint being an issue, you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and purchase a test kit.  You can of course hire a professional painting team that will be equipped for a project of this undertaking. While you are there be sure to bring a list of the items you will need for the project; there is nothing worse than starting a project and having to stop and go to the store in mid-process.

Once the walls have been prepped for painting the next step is choosing a color palette you would like for your home.  When making this decision try to accompany the actual style of the home itself. Is it more earth tones or is it more rustic? What was the style of homes from that period? A lot of older homes used wainscoting which protected the lower part of walls from scuffing and dirt marks.  If you want to modernize the home, then use the colors that suit your taste and are trending currently. Whether your goal is to restore a historic home back to its original beauty or just make necessary repairs, there will be a lot of work involved but the reward should be well worth it.

Please feel free to contact us at University Painters for tips or a free estimate. We may be able to help you save money and headaches in the long run. e 7 Co
